  • What age groups do you cater to?

We cater for learners from Grade R to Grade 12 or up to the age of 21.

  • How does the homeschooling programme at Diverse Skills Academy differ from mainstream schools in South Africa?

The homeschooling programme at Diverse Skills Academy stands out from mainstream schools in several important ways, particularly in its approach to education, emotional support, and individual learner needs:

    Personalised Learning Approach:

Unlike mainstream schools, where large class sizes often limit individual attention, Diverse Skills Academy offers a highly personalised learning experience. Each learner’s academic journey is tailored to their strengths, learning styles, and pace. This individualised approach ensures that learners who struggle with traditional classroom settings, such as those with ADHD, Autism, or Dyslexia, receive the specific support they need to thrive academically.

    Focus on Emotional Well-being:

Emotional well-being is at the core of Diverse Skills Academy's philosophy. Mainstream schools often prioritise academic performance, sometimes at the expense of a child's mental health. At Diverse Skills Academy, the focus is on creating a nurturing and emotionally supportive environment. Learners engage in therapies, including equine-assisted therapy, which helps them manage issues like anxiety, trauma, and depression. The belief is that academic success is best achieved when a learner’s emotional health is well-supported.

    Flexibility and Adaptability:

In mainstream schools, curricula and schedules are often rigid, leaving little room for flexibility. The homeschooling programme at Diverse Skills Academy offers a more adaptable structure. Learners can progress at their own pace, and the programme can be adjusted based on their needs. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for children who need breaks or a different pace to cope with emotional challenges or learning disabilities.

    Inclusive and Safe Environment:

Children who do not feel at home in mainstream schools, perhaps due to bullying or social anxiety, often thrive in the inclusive and accepting environment at Diverse Skills Academy. The smaller, supportive setting allows children to feel safe and valued, fostering a sense of belonging that may be lacking in larger, more traditional schools.

    Therapeutic Integration:

Mainstream schools in South Africa typically do not integrate therapeutic services into their daily structure. At Diverse Skills Academy, therapy is a key part of the programme. The use of equine therapy, for example, is a unique aspect of the academy's offering. Horses provide a calming influence and help learners build confidence, emotional resilience, and self-regulation, something traditional schools cannot offer within their typical classroom settings.

    Holistic Development Focus:

While mainstream schools tend to prioritise academic achievement and standardised testing, Diverse Skills Academy emphasizes holistic development. The goal is not just to meet academic milestones but to help learners grow emotionally, socially, and intellectually. This holistic approach is particularly beneficial for learners with conditions like ADHD, Autism, and Dyslexia, where social and emotional development may be just as critical as academic success.

    Smaller Class Sizes:

In most mainstream schools, large class sizes mean less one-on-one time with teachers, which can leave some children behind. At Diverse Skills Academy, smaller class sizes allow for more personalised teaching and support. This ensures that learners receive the guidance and attention they need to succeed academically and emotionally.

  • What is equine-assisted therapy, and how does it help?

Equine-assisted therapy involves structured activities with horses that help learners develop emotional regulation, self-confidence, and social skills. The interaction with horses can be especially calming for children with anxiety or trauma, and it offers a unique way to build trust and emotional resilience in a safe environment.
